Mackintoshs Outstanding Chair : The Ladder Back Chair And Its Meaning In Design . A Master Piece
The development of interior design, its concepts and visions is an irreplaceable fact and necessity, since due to this, we are aspiring a new and more complemore meaningful visions regarding this. Along the evolution , a lot of designers added ideas to the development of design , with their unique , outstanding works .
One of the designers, who is worth to mention is Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a designer, who despite of the fact that was criticized for his creations all the time , had an irreplaceable role in the changing the design, art and crafts. Thanks to him, new approaches , visions were established regarding design and new symbolization were added to each piece of furniture. Such a piece is the ladder back chair, a stunning piece that besides of its functionality , it can be considered even a piece of art , due to its unique and extravagant construction in those times.
The ladder back chair is a true master piece, due to its complex and significant construction. Every line he traced while designing is because of a reason, everything is thought well. The back of the chair is composed of 25 lines and on the top of them there is another 5 horizontal lines, through which 5 vertical lines are passing, this way, the back of the chair has 25 lines and a quadrilateral, the last being composed by another 25 smaller quadrilaterals. As we know, quadrilaterals are the symbol of stability and earth; while the number 25 can be decomposed to 5 multiplying with 5: 25=5*5. The number 5 has a special meaning, since it reminds us of the pentagon, the symbol of connection between humans, Gods and universe.
The lines that are part of the so called ladder back are actually curves. As known, curves are parts cut form a circle. The circle that contains these curves has the center in the middle of the limit of the chair seat. This point is also the center of the two ovals, that are on the top of the two back legs of the chair. We also have to know that the legs have conical construction, but in reverse direction. This adds more to the impression of stability. The material used to construct this piece is an ash of dark color, that will match perfectly with the claret chair seat.
As proved above, this piece of furniture is more than a chair and knowing these details , we naturally consider it with another point of view and impression. All I can say to Mackintosh is congratulation for a stunning piece of art and furniture!
